I thought I would revisit this issue, I know I have written about the EU before but I wanted to try and paint a picture of what the reality of the EU is. I have found that most people are not interested in the EU, they either think it is; irrelevant to our lives, not very interesting or just a side issue to what is really happening within our country. I generally don't talk to anyone about the EU because they find it boring and if I try to they either groan or switch off, I understand this reaction.
So I have decided that since this is my blog site I am going to write about the EU; over the next few weeks I am going to explain simply why the EU is so awful, and why this organisation does not care about the people of Europe and is only bothered about power.
Firstly; one fact, the EU has an annual propaganda budget of 2.6 billion Euros, this is used to spread the news about the EU and how wonderful it is. During the recent referendum in Ireland, in which the Irish people were made to vote again on whether they should ratify the Lisbon Treaty (don't you think it is strange that a country should be made to vote twice on an issue which they have already voted no for), the EU pumped millions of European tax payers money into the yes campaign, and the no campaign had to make do with donations from individuals and a few MEP's.
I want to look at one argument which has been put forward in favour of the EU. The EU propaganda machine would say that they have brought peace to Europe. There has not been a war between the major powers in Europe in the past 70 years and this is all thanks to the EU. This of course is complete rubbish and does not stand up to simple scrutiny.
Let me give you a quick potted history; in 1914 Germany invaded Belgium thus starting WW1 (I know officially it kicked of when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austro-Hungary was assassinated but this was really a side issue to what Germany wanted and gave them an excuse to go to war). The war finished in defeat in 1918 for Germany. In 1933 Hitler came to power and in 1939 went to war, and in 1945 Germany was defeated by the combined forces of Great Britain and her empire, USA and the USSR. That is a very quick overview of what happened over a period of about 30 years, it is of course hugely complicated and many people have written many books on this issue.
The crux of the argument in favour of the EU and peace is that the EU will say they have kept peace by bringing people together to talk. This is better than what has happened over the previous centuries, when Europe has had countless wars and millions of people have died, sounds fair. But the truth is as always not as simple as that.
1. The greatest threat of war in Europe after WW2 was directly after, between 1946 and 1949 between The USA and USSR and the EU did not exist. The EU did not exist as a political entity officially until many years later.
2. The main protagonist in both world wars was Germany, after WW2 the main powers made sure Germany could not go to war again by occupying it. The USSR occupied East Germany and The USA, Britain and France occupied the rest. Plus, as part of it's new constitution it was made illegal for Germany to have an army over a certain size and its army could not get involved in any external conflict.
3. There has never been a war between democracies.
4. Peace in Europe was maintained in Europe by the US; without America's money most of Europe would probably have fallen to the communists, particularly Italy and France. No country in Europe wanted war or could afford to go to war, so with assistance from America peace was maintained.
In 1957 the Treaty of Rome was signed between 6 nations, this did not keep peace, the dream of a united Europe was a dream of one man Jean Monnet (not the painter). Peace in Europe has been brought about by democracies and not the EU. Answer me this question, in the past 70 years has there been any possibility that war would break out between France, Germany and Great Britain? Of course not. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the EU and to do with the fact that these countries have maintained democratic governments which are accountable to the people. We are now in a situation which I feel could lead to unrest and civil disorder, let me quickly explain.
In 2009 the Lisbon Treaty was finally ratified, this gave the EU a political identity, they no longer needed to worry about nation states, they can basically do what they want and no one can stop them. This means no more democracy and no more accountability, and with these two things gone that means we, the people no longer matter. We no longer control our destiny and the power is now in the hands of unelected people who do not care about the people they are supposed to represent. If you do not believe me, ask yourself one question, can you get rid of the President of Europe? I'll answer it for you, NO!!!! That to me sums up everything about the EU.
As I have said above, I have spoken to many people in the past about the EU and been met with disinterest and in a lot of cases unbelief, they either think I am exaggerating all of this or I am just some kind of extremist or conspiracy theorist, this is what the EU want you to believe. With a 2.6 billion euro propaganda budget (I bet there are people out there who don't believe that) it is very easy for them to get you to believe anything.
