Why I hate the EU!

Hate is a very strong word and I would never use it lightly, there are many things I dislike but I would say there are only a very few I hate, the EU is one of them. When putting forward an argument I believe it is very important to look at the facts, and try to remain objective, unfortunately in this world we now live in it is very difficult to get to the truth. One person will argue something and will view what they say through personal experience and then insist that is the truth. If you look at the discussions around parenthood and how to raise children you will find many people will have many ideas on what is the right way to raise a child and will insist it is right. But as you can imagine it isn't always as simple as that because children are all different and what is good for one isn't necessarily good for another.

Many people would say the same about my argument about the EU, they would say it is my opinion and there are others who would argue that the EU is good so their opinion is just as valid. I would agree with their right to their opinion but I would not agree that their opinion is right, as most people who argue in favour of the benefits of the EU have not looked into the workings of this organisation, and their argument would be based upon their opinion rather than fact.

So why do I hate the EU so much? I have stated previously that the EU is unaccountable, undemocratic and corrupt and if you want to see what I have said previously please feel free to do so. But I wanted to explain some of the fundamental reasons for my hatred. Firstly the British people were lied to about the reason for us joining what was then in the Common Market. In 1975 the then Prime Minister Harold Wilson allowed the British people a referendum on its continued membership of the Common Market, he said it was purely an economic entity, he knew it was not and he lied. On the basis of the economic argument an overwhelming majority voted in favour. At the time Britain's economy was struggling and the six members of the Common Market were doing very well, so the British people were told it would benefit us, they were lied to. Ever since that time the Common Market has morphed into the EEC, the EC and now the EU without any consent or agreement from the people of Europe. Just one other point about the economic benefits, in 1975 the six members of the Common Market and the UK made up 35 per cent of the worlds GDP, now the 27 nations of the EU make up 15 per cent of the worlds GDP. It does seem strange that we have thrown our lot in with these shrinking economies.

Great Britain has a judicial system in which you are innocent until proven guilty, it's parliament is known throughout the world as the Mother of Parliaments. Britain has always been a country which values freedom of speech, it is a place which is tolerant, this is shown by how we have accepted so many people from around this world. Britain has many traditions and characteristics; fairness, politeness, good manners, these are all things which I am proud of. Over recent years I have watched as everyone of these things has been undermined and it has happened gradually, but I can now see the pace of change getting quicker.

The EU does not believe in innocent until proven guilty, this has been shown by its adoption of the European Arrest Warrant . This piece of legislation means you can be accused of a crime in another country and as long as the prosecutors in that country fill in the forms correctly you will be extradited and there is nothing anyone can do about it. 'Trials in Absentia' will become EU law very soon and when this is adopted I would recommend not going on holiday anywhere in the EU, because if you are accused of a crime you could be tried and convicted in your absence. And the first thing you will know about it is when you get the knock on the door and are heading off to serve a prison sentence in a foreign land with no right of appeal. Here is a link explaining this piece of legislation http://www.openeurope.org.uk/research/tia.pdf.

I have mentioned the problems about the EU's lack of democracy before so I am not going to write about it here. The EU is corrupt and cannot be reformed, it's auditors have refused for the 16th year in a row to sign off it's budget, this sums up the corrupt nature of the EU.

Now you may argue that that is my point of view and as far as you are concerned the EU is good. You might like everything about the EU, you might be happy to overlook the problems with; corruption, lack of democracy, the Euro, an unelected President, its huge wastefulness, its declining importance economically. You might think it is the most wonderful thing that has ever been invented, and be the most Europhile person in the world, you might be happy to be ruled from Brussels. Surely it is right to tell the people of Britain the truth about the European Union; the truth about the laws which are made and affect us, the truth about the reason for Post Office closures; the truth about how many laws are now made in Brussels and are not decided by our own elected MPs. Surely it is only fair, just and right to allow the people of Britain to at least have a say on whether we want to be ruled by a group of unelected individuals. And that is my point, as I have said above the British people were lied to in 1975, they were told it was not ever going to be a political union, those who said it was going to be were ridiculed, the likes of Tony Benn and Hugh Gaitskell explained this to the British people but were laughed at. Unfortunately these two men were right!

I do not want to be ruled by people in Brussels, that does not mean I am Xenophobic, I do not hate foreigners, I am not 'a little englander', I do not hate Europe, or do not want to trade with them. I just want to have a say on whether we hand over our sovereignty to these people. As Hugh Gaitskell the former leader of the Labour Party once said;

"We must be clear about this; it does not mean, if this is the idea, the end of Britain as an independent European state, it means the end of a thousand years of history. You may say "let it end". But my goodness, it is a decision which needs a little care and thought".

This is my main point, no one in this country has ever been allowed to have a vote on our being part of a European super state, no one has ever been told the truth by any Prime Minister that this is the way it is heading. If you spoke to David Cameron about this he would say it is not happening, but it is! I want to be governed by my own Government and as long as this is not happening I will never agree with the EU and everything it stands for. No one in Europe has ever been allowed to have a say on whether they want a European super state. The EU do not believe in democracy, this was shown to be true when they took no notice of the French and Dutch people's rejection of the EU Constitution in 2005 and the Irish rejection of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. This sums up this organisation and all it stands for and that is why I hate it!!!!

  1. See;United Kingdom European Communities membership referendum, 1975 From Wikipedia. Labour PM Wilson called the referendum.
    I wouldn't trust Condemeron to hold a fair referendum. Even the 1975 one could have been ignored by the government if they chose to.I hate them all, but I love my vote.
    Winston T McKenzie should organise the EU leaving party!!

  2. I stand corrected, you are right, Harold Wilson did call the referendum, but Ted Heath was the Prime Minister who took us in and I hold them both as guilty as all our Prime Ministers who have never spoken the truth about the EU. Thank you for putting me right.
